Sen. Diaz and Sen. Waller are not present.

8:04 pm:

The agenda now includes Bill 05-11F Seahawk Madness Purchases and has been approved.

8:05 pm:

Interim Director of CTSS is now addressing the SGA about technology on-campus.

8:05 pm:

Gass is discussing a survey conducted last month about technology priorities for the upcoming year.

8:07 pm:

The survey included 177 students (9%), 79 staff (34%) and 67 staff (17%).

8:10 pm:

Gass is discussing the responses to the survey, which indicate that students are largely more satisfied with the technology on-campus compared to faculty and to a lessor extent, staff.

8:11 pm:

The top priority for students is faster internet.

8:12 pm:

Second priority, extended wireless internet access to all of campus.

8:12 pm:

Third priority, wireless printing.

8:13 pm:

Wireless printing could be possible by the end of the school year.

8:13 pm:

Fourth priority, improve web portal speed and content.

8:14 pm:

Fifth priority, improve help desk (including elimination of outsourcing).

8:14 pm:

Faculty’s top complaint is to improve the help desk by eliminating outsourcing.

8:15 pm:

The faculty would also like to invest in new technologies like Google Apps.

8:15 pm:

The staff’s top complaint was also to improve the help desk.

8:17 pm:

The company the school outsources the help desk to costs ,000 a year.

8:17 pm:

Few calls come into the help desk on weekends or outside of regular business hours.

8:18 pm:

One of Gass’ recommendations is returning help desk staffed by students locally.

8:19 pm:

Gass believes we are the first college in the U.S. to have 24/7 help desk access.

8:20 pm:

SMCM has about half the number of CTSS staff as our peer institutions and a third among our aspirant peers.

8:21 pm:

SMCM has fewer staff within CTSS because staff salaries are defined by the state, making them much lower than other peer colleges.

8:21 pm:

SMCM also uses far fewer students within CTSS as our peer institutions.

8:23 pm:

Gass hopes increase the CTSS staff by three full-time employees and three full-time equivalent student positions (about 20 students).

8:24 pm:

Gass wants to form a work-group to address the long-term issues around increasing internet access.

8:25 pm:

Gass is moving the college to Google Apps within the next year. Alumni already use Google Apps.

8:28 pm:

Gass would also like to ‘go green’ “by transitioning from physical to virtual servers and by exploring opportunities for desktop virtualization.”

8:30 pm:

Finally, Gass wants to include students on all major decisions in CTSS as well as the overall direction.

8:30 pm:

CTSS has loaner laptops and port switches for students on the ship.

8:32 pm:

In response to a question about the ship’s internet speed, Gass said CTSS could restrict certain types of internet use on the ship like streaming videos to improve internet speed.

8:33 pm:

Gass suggests keeping doors open to help improve internet speed on the ship.

Club Constitution 12-11F Poker Club

Purpose: “The purpose of this club is to teach students how to play poker using statistics and game theory. It will be a learning experience as well as a fun time to play cards. Members will also learn the many different forms of games that poker entails (such as Texas Holdem’, Omaha, 5 Card Draw, Stud, Razz, etc). Using these skills members will be able to compete for fun prizes, as well as have a fun opportunity to socialize over poker games.”

Analysis: Very similar to the Smokin’ Aces Club and the Poker Club may need to justify why a second club is necessary.

Club Constitution 13-11F St. Mary’s Drum Corp

Purpose: “The purpose of SMDC is to allow students the opportunity to participate in a Drum-Corp. It will give students the chance to develop and enhance their skills in playing the marching drums, while ensuring they have a memorable and enjoyable time doing so. It will replace the typical intense and vigorous attitude of typical drum corps with a more relaxed social environment. The vision for this club is to also be able to perform at local school events – such as sports events, open houses, social gatherings and orientations – and at other nearby schools and functions.”

Analysis: Will definitely come down to funding. Drums are expensive and the club will need to discuss what equipment they will need and justify it.

Finance Board Emergency Fund Appeals Allocations

Emergency fund appeals offer clubs the opportunity to request funds they did not budget for. The SGA Treasurer meets with groups requesting funds and submits an aggregated request to SGA for approval. The following is a summery of the Treasurer’s aggregate request:

Art Club: Requested $144.85 for art supplies and was granted 100% of their reqest.

Outdoor Adventure Club: Requested $1314.10 for LED Headlamps, Lodging, Radios, GPS and reimbursements and was granted $683.43 for half the headlamps, radios and one GPS. They were denied funding for lodging and reimbursements as they do not qualify for emergency funding.

Fencing Club: Requested $1471.21 for 30 electric swords, a socket set, ten electric tips and four tip screws and was granted 100% of their request.

St. Mary’s Recreational Clay Shooting Club: Requested $925 for range fees, gun rentals and ammo and was denied 100% of fund because the fund requested do not qualify as an emergency appeal.

Young Americans for Liberty and Club Softball indicated they would request funds but did not show up for fund appeal hearings.
